Two piece paddles

No offset Greenland paddle

I have a Werner Camano paddle and I'm very happy with it with one exception recently discovered.

The two piece paddle can be offset from neutral in increments of 15 degrees. The scale is printed on a decal glued to the paddle shaft. That's great but its subject to wear and tear. Tuesday evening the decal took a beating at the pool and off it drifted. That got me to thinking, why don't they engrave the scale into the paddle shaft itself? Doing so would permanently stamp the scale on the paddle.

Maybe I'll drop them a line with that suggestion.

  1. I am waiting for that moment with my Werner Cyprus! Perhaps I should make a few marks on the paddle before it happens.

  2. That would be a good idea. I knew where I had the offset in comparison with my first paddle so it wasn't hard to figure out. Once I had it in the right position I scribed a mark across the join so I can fit it easier when out paddling.

I mailed Werner and will be interesting to see what they say!

  3. Engraving means taking each paddle, during manufacture, and somehow putting these marks on. I'm guessing that they are not "cast" so you can't simply make a mold with marks built it. Paddles are made of CF that is wrapped. Adding the marks would have to be done after the wrapping is done = an added step = more cost = a no-go for a company wanting to make money. I'd suggest scribing your paddle once you've figured out your offset OR go with the "original" unfeathered paddle as shown above with Dean! I still can't get my head around the need to feather paddles. That extra twist can't be good for the wrist!!

  4. Sean, I believe I started paddling with an offset because everyone else was and my first paddle had two settings - neutral and 45 degrees. I'm now at 30 but may try with 15 or neutral. I just haven't thought about trying it before.

Not sold yet on the GP. I have to carve another longer and wider paddle to try before I make a decision.
