When the wind flops

Yesterday the wind forecast was SW 15 - 20 knots with gusts near 35.  Not too appetizing so we met at St Philips for some playtime in the anticipated winds  They didn't materialize so we went for a paddle to Topsail Beach.  If the wind did pick up we would turn and run back downwind .

It is a familiar coast that never seems to lose its appeal. The theme for the day was paddling through rock gardens and  whitewater

At Topsail Beach we got out to stretch our legs and Dean decided to run the whitewater spilling out of the lagoon behind the cobble bar.  Brian, Dean and I ran the same run of water on February 3rd when it looked more fibreglass friendly.  This time Brian and I passed, it looked too rocky.

Good thing too we didn't try it.  Dean in his plastic kayak came down the stream going bump, bump, clunk, clunk over the rocks.

Every paddle, even along familiar territory, is what you make of it.  I've lost count of the number of times I've paddled the coast between St. Philips and Topsail but its always entertaining.

Some additional shots on Deans Blog.

  1. another month or so and I'll be a bystander too, letting the plastic kayakers have such fun.... sometimes I wonder if I've made the right choice going with a new FG kayak. But I guess I'll hold on to my plastic one for when I feel a need to go bump and clunk...

  2. You made the right decision Dean. You'll mark up the gel coat after a while with use but its no big thing.

  3. Hey Tony, I finally got out for a paddle yesterday in Spread Eagle. So good to be on the water again. Looks like my knee will tolerate being in my boat, with a water bottle propped under it. Similar to what you say above, I've lost count of the number of times i've paddled from Spread Eagle to Southern Point and back, but it never gets old, never loses its appeal.

Good on you Dean for upgrading to glass, you won't regret it!

  4. Good to hear Brian that you were out and it worked out OK. Dean is getting a Nordkapp and should be here in the second week of May.

  5. you are optimistic Tony... I am trying not to get my hopes up of an early arrival. I think last year the shipment was late in arriving... It is due to ship on April 30th... assuming it does I have no idea how long it takes to get from there to here... But I do hope to be paddling it in mid-May
