Surf's up

Feeling the bottom

We landed for lunch when we got back into Tors Cove from Bauline Head where a few suggested we go out again to play in the breaking waves between Fox Island and the Cribbies. There was some support for that but it slowly dissipated once we had our bellies full. Instead, we walked over to have a closer look on foot.

The power in the water was awesome. It was near low tide which made the incoming waves really stand up in the approaches to the channel. The closer look reinforced a reluctance to put in again. The low tide exposed rocks. Without a helmet it would have been foolhardy.

At high tide, in the right conditions, its a place to keep in mind for some playtime. Maybe next summer in warmer weather.

  2. The only ideal time to be in that channel is when it's nice and calm. It is EXTREMELY shallow (mere feet) and the bottom is solid rock with larger rocks coming close to the surface all over the place. Try playing in the waves there and you'd need more than a helmet. Its a very unforgiving place that would chew you up and spit you out. Glad to see that you decided not to "play " there last week! I'd try to find less hazardous places to ride the waves!

    Just my 2 cents.

  3. Gio, it was a very impressive impressive display of the power of water. I've seen Youtube clips in similar waves but not for me yet.

High tide and moderate waves wouldn't be a bad couple of hours practice Sean!

  4. I would consider it at high tide when the rocks are submerged but not in the conditions that existed when we first got there.
