The curse of numbers
Records are made to be broken. All sports have records that subsequent athletes chase to get their names into the record books.
Last year I set a personal record - I was in my kayak 115 times. This year I felt I had to reach that same level or beat it. Well, I won't make it and I have mixed feelings about that. I'll still have an embarrassing number of days in the boat but I won't reach 115. I have 100 firmly within my sights and that's still not a bad year of paddling.

ah, Tony, if anyone should be embarrassed at numbers it should be someone like me as I work full time and have hit 88 times in my kayaks(that includes pool, pond, river, and salt water paddles and practices). I don't know if I will catch up to you, but I do hope to break 100 before 2010 is over as well. 100 times in your kayak is only an average of twice a week.... a feat that is easily achievable by anyone with a kayak and a desire to be on the water.
ReplyDeleteYes, you should be ashamed of yourself Dean *lol* spending so much time in your kayak.
ReplyDeleteTony :-)
I've deceided I'll have different goals each year, to avoid that. This year I counted kilometres - next year I'll try not to, and count times in kayak instead. Or numbers of rolls, or whatever. Don't want kayaking to get stressfull, but if i start counting km again... Auch. I can't, must not...
ReplyDeleteMia, that's a great idea. I think next year I'll count kms, hopefully I'll get a lot of them.
ReplyDeleteTony :-)
I've never even entertained the idea of keeping track of how many times I've been in the boat/year! It's bad enough having work goals to stress you out let alone stressing over not attaining the desired amount of times in the boat. I get out when I can and enjoy it when I do.
ReplyDeleteWhen I bike raced back in the 80's, I used to keep a log of rides, distances and conditions. But I was in training. Now I just paddle for the sheer enjoyment. No need to know how may times or total accumulative distances.
Like Dean I have a full time job but I also have two kids (11 and 13) who'd like to spend time with their Dad on the weekend as well be taken places and do things! I also have a spouse who'd like to spend time with me as well. I have to balance my time accordingly!
I guess I'm shooting for quality over quantity! Make those times, albeit unrecorded, on the water really count!!
Different strokes for different folks, I guess
